MYSTERY HORSE RANCH

Rescue and retirement

Welcome to our site,

Alot of people ask the big question:

WHAT EXACTLY DO WE DO:

My husband and I provide a home for horses that have been with people all their lives a retirement home for the old and lame and an alternative to the meat market. I believe thats its unfair to sell a horse to meat just because its old or because a person can not handle a sucky horse that walks all over them. We can not take them all in. When a horse first arrives we have the vet come do a check up. What people need to understand is that we DO NOT have any funding to help us with this, everything is paid out of our own pocket and this is why we adopt out rehabiliated horses as well as sell some of our own breed foals and older mares. We get back the cost that we put into the horse such as vet bills, training hours, feed and of course vaccinations. If the horses are old or lame they are here to stay they only way that we put them down is with euthinasia if the vet deems necessary. We get some abused horses that in time can trust humans again and be a perfect pet or even pleasure horse for someone that has time for them. We have the ad out for PEOPLE to CALL US and offer their horses to us we do NOT take horses away from people. I have been around horses since the age of 2 and owned several of my own being involved in 4H, barrel racing, and local riding clubs. I still have alot to learn but have taken Monty Roberts JOIN UP as a training method on our farm. No abuse, no vices, and at my farm its up to the horse, when they are ready its all up to them. I am getting to know other peoples methods and other farms in Saskatchewan that help horses. Horses help children with handicaps and help cowboys with farming and I could go on...

So I am here to help horses. People mistake us as people that are rescuing horses FROM the auctions, we provide an alternative. We dont believe in the meat market and understand that people would rather make a buck sometimes even if its a hundred bucks at the auction for their horses because they dont care as long as they are rid of them which is up to the people. Some people on the other hand cant afford their horses or come to a point where they are unable to ride them or have no idea what to do with a lame horse so they call us because the thought of auction meat is devistating to them. Some people have many views on what we do and I appreciate the feed back we get. I spend EVERYDAY with all the horses so they get human effection and work with some of the mistrusting horses when they are ready. The biggest question that we encounter is WHY and HOW so I hope that this helps.

How do we afford to do this:

My husband works full time and I have a part time job as well as make money off items on our site and public donations which are very few. We also breed 4 QH mares per year to a stud that is owned by us. I never over breed and only pick a mare that is a good mother. Mares get bred at the age of 5 once they are trained and broke to ride, they get bred with a year span between and every mare only gets bred 3 times. The colts get halter broke and loaded and then get placed up for sale. We buy our feed for winter so we take donations in feed as well cause we never know how many horses we will have over the winter months. There is no funding for what we do because we are not recongnized as an organization for animal welfare. We hope that people will donate out of will and caring rather then a must so we deal the best we can.

Things we are currently trying to improve

We are putting up new fencing in our back pasture, we are fixing up the shelter as well as placing a new barn on the property with 2 useable stalls. We are also going to be fencing some new areas with a round pen. As farmers know these items are not cheap so we are going to work hard to get it completed by Mid Summer. Thanks for your concern
